Decatur Street Beat

Return to RMG

Decatur Street Beat has played foot stomping, toe tapping, New Orleans style Dixieland music since 2004. The group is made up of four experienced musicians from the Durham area.

They want to bring to central North Carolina what they feel is the happiest, liveliest and easiest music to listen to.

About the Artist

Dick Sloane
Trombone

Dick has played actively with a number of Dixieland bands in the Triangle area since 1982. He is the leader of the Fidgety Feet Dixieland band. Dick currently works for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in the Research Triangle Park.

Keith Longmire
Clarinet & Saxophone

Keith is a retired band director from the Durham Public Schools, having taught his last 15 years at Carrington Middle School. He has also taught in Columbus County and Granville County Schools. Keith repairs, buys and sells woodwind instruments, so if you are looking for a clarinet or saxophone, Keith's your man. Keith also plays with Leon Jordan's Continentals Dance Band.

Irv Eisen
Tuba

Irv started playing the tuba in the seventh grade in St. Louis. He received a degree in music education from the University of Missouri at St. Louis, played at 'Your Father's Mustache' on Bourbon St. in the early 1970's and freelanced in St. Louis. Recently retired as a computer systems manager for Duke University, Irv plays with the Durham Community Concert Band, the Triangle Tuba Quartet and the Decatur Street Beat.

Mike Acquesta
Banjo

Mike started playing the 5-string banjo in 1984, because he was such a strong bluegrass music fan. After attending the Tennessee Banjo Institute, he formed "Banjo in the Hollow," the Triangle Area bluegrass association, in 1990. After enjoying many years of playing the 5-string banjo, he was influenced by his father-in-law, trumpeter John Ely, to begin playing Dixieland. He switched to the 4-string banjo in 1998 when he began playing for the St. Mark's and Fuquay-Varina Dixieland jazz bands.
